ChatGPT now lets your team build shared agents that handle repeatable work
OpenAI introduced workspace agents in ChatGPT this week, a meaningful step beyond custom GPTs. Teams can now create shared agents that take on repeatable work across tools, follow agreed processes, and continue working in the cloud even when you are away.
Powered by Codex, these agents are built for messy, multi-step work: they can gather context, use connected apps, ask for approval before sensitive actions, and produce outputs your team can review, reuse, and improve over time.
Here are the key updates:
- Shared agents your whole team can use: Agents are designed to be shared within an organization, so teams can build one once, use it together, and improve it over time.
- Built for repeatable workflows: OpenAI gives examples such as weekly metrics reporting, product feedback routing, lead outreach, software request review, and third-party risk screening.
- Works across connected tools: Agents can connect to tools such as Google Drive, Google Calendar, Slack, and SharePoint, with support for skills, files, and custom MCP servers.
- Can run without you watching: Agents can handle long-running tasks in the cloud, run on a schedule, and continue working even when you are away.
- You control what agents can and can't do: For sensitive steps like editing a spreadsheet, sending an email, or adding a calendar event, you can require the agent to ask for permission before moving forward. Admins set role-based controls on who can build, run, and publish agents.
Workspace agents are available in research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans. For Enterprise and Edu, admins can enable agents using role-based controls. Credit-based pricing begins May 6, 2026.
For leaders on Business or Enterprise plans, this is the update most worth acting on this week. Many teams have already identified workflows that feel manual and repetitive, such as weekly reporting, request triage, data pulls across tools. Workspace agents are built for exactly that work.
