NextEra Energy AI Strategy: Power, Savings and Software
How NextEra Energy approaches AI: power for AI data centers, its REWIRE AI platform, the savings it reports and targets, and the AI tools it sells with Google Cloud. Updated November 2026.
US utility and energy developer: Florida Power & Light and NextEra Energy Resources, the largest US builder of wind, solar and storage
AI has its own section in the December 2025 investor conference, with REWIRE as the AI platform and a savings target; the 2025 annual report adds AI to the company strategy. No standalone AI strategy.

NextEra treats AI as a market, a cost tool and a product. It is building power for AI data centers at gigawatt scale, using AI to run its own fleet more cheaply, and selling the AI tools it built to other utilities through Google Cloud. It has also set a forward savings target for AI: about $150 million a year at its renewables business.
The CEO calls it an enterprise-wide transformation. On the first-quarter 2026 call, CEO John Ketchum described “an enterprise-wide AI transformation that we expect to unlock top-line growth and cost savings” (call transcript, April 2026). At its December 2025 investor conference, NextEra said it is “rapidly deploying artificial intelligence to expand its competitive advantages.”
AI is new in the formal strategy. The 2025 annual report says NextEra is “deploying advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and proprietary tools” to lower costs and drive growth. The business section of the 2024 annual report did not mention AI.
Outside, AI is the growth market.
- Data center hubs: a target of 15 gigawatts of new generation by 2035 for at least 20 data center hubs, which Ketchum called “fairly conservative” (E&E News, December 2025)
- Google: a deal to restart Iowa’s 615-megawatt Duane Arnold nuclear plant (DCD, October 2025), and plans for several gigawatt-scale data center campuses
- Dominion Energy: a proposed all-stock acquisition worth about $67 billion, announced in May 2026 as AI drives power demand (AP), expected to close in the second half of 2027
Inside, the focus is the grid and the fleet. NextEra uses AI for site selection, transmission routing, storm response, load modeling, predictive maintenance, generation dispatch and field work (investor conference). It has not said what it will not prioritize.
What It Takes: REWIRE, Google and Tools for the Field
REWIRE became the AI engine. REWIRE is NextEra’s annual bottom-up cost program, which it credits with more than $3.3 billion in cumulative annual run-rate savings since 2013. It now serves as the company’s AI product development platform (investor conference). Ketchum named two of the tools built on it in April 2026 (call transcript):
- Grid Composer: “uses AI to optimize and orchestrate all aspects of the power generation process”
- Conduit: “an AI-powered tool designed to upskill our already best-in-class renewables workforce”
Google is the partner, and NextEra keeps the IP. In December 2025, NextEra and Google Cloud agreed to sell REWIRE products to the energy industry. NextEra keeps 100% of the intellectual property and the software revenue, and Google keeps the cloud revenue (investor conference). The first product, Optos, launched in September 2026 on Google’s agent platform (Google Cloud).
A dedicated unit builds the tools. Rich Argentieri, president of NextEra Analytics, leads the work. The first version of Grid Composer was built in under 12 weeks (POWER, September 2026).
AI reaches the field. Argentieri estimated that 85% to 90% of Florida Power & Light’s workforce uses voice-activated AI tools for specifications and work-order guidance and can photograph a part to match it in the parts catalog (POWER, paraphrased). He said AI support helps newer technicians through their learning curve. NextEra has not published a training standard; its approach is tool-led AI fluency, built into the work.
The workforce is growing. Headcount rose from about 15,300 in 2022 to about 17,400 in 2025, and Ketchum names labor as a constraint on building new plants. NextEra has not linked AI to job cuts.
Governance is not described. The sources reviewed contain no published AI principles or review process. NextEra’s third-quarter 2026 release carries a risk warning that “planned productivity increases and competitive advantages through the use of artificial intelligence technologies” may not be realized.
AI fluency, coded against the Lead with AI Fluency Matrix (September 2026 edition):
- Fluency floor: Not published. Most of FPL’s field workforce uses AI tools, by the company’s estimate, but no training standard has been set.
- Highest level evidenced: Level 3 (Integrating), company-claimed. AI is built into generation dispatch, outage scheduling, transmission routing and field work, with reported savings. The sources reviewed do not show AI running a process end to end, so Level 4 is not evidenced.
- Portfolio design: Specialist-built, workforce-deployed. NextEra Analytics builds the tools, field crews use them, and the best are sold to other utilities.
How NextEra Energy Measures Results
NextEra reports AI value in money, and sets a target. All figures below are company-claimed:
- Customer savings: AI-optimized dispatch and outage scheduling saved FPL customers more than $20 million in 2026 so far (POWER, September 2026)
- Development: site and design optimization produced about $450 million in net present value gains, and transmission routing fell from over two weeks to under 20 minutes (investor conference, December 2025)
- Operations: AI helped FPL avoid 44,000 truck rolls in 2024, and real-time algorithms added 1.2 million MWh of output at NextEra Energy Resources the same year
- Target: REWIRE and AI are expected to deliver about $150 million in annual pre-tax cost savings at NextEra Energy Resources, over 2026 to 2032
A forward target makes AI accountable. It turns results reported after the fact into a commitment that can be checked, which is the move from AI adoption to AI value.
The software business is unproven. Optos is new, and NextEra has not disclosed revenue from it.
Next markers: regulatory decisions on the Dominion deal, expected from January 2027, and whether Optos revenue appears in results.
Change log
- October 2025: NextEra and Google agree to restart the Duane Arnold nuclear plant.

- February 2026: The 2025 annual report adds AI to the company strategy.
- April 2026: Ketchum describes an enterprise-wide AI transformation and names Grid Composer and Conduit.
- May 2026: NextEra agrees to acquire Dominion Energy.
- September 2026: Optos launches, and NextEra reports more than $20 million in customer savings from AI dispatch.
- October 2026: The third-quarter release warns that planned AI productivity gains may not be realized.
The Bottom Line
- Disclosure: 3 of 4. NextEra answers where it is going, where it will focus and how it will know, with dollar results and a forward target. What it will take is answered in part: there is no training standard or governance disclosure.
- AI is a market, a cost tool and a product: power for data centers, savings in its own operations, and software for other utilities.
- It sets a forward AI savings target, about $150 million a year at its renewables business.
- It keeps the IP. Google sells the tools, and NextEra owns them.
- Headcount is growing, and AI is framed as upskilling, not job cuts.
- The say-do gap is governance. A company selling AI tools to other utilities has no published AI governance in the sources reviewed.
- Watch Optos. The test is whether AI becomes a revenue line, not only a cost line.
Revenue, Headcount and Revenue per Employee
What the numbers show: Revenue rose 31% from 2022 to 2025 and headcount grew 14%, so revenue per employee rose 15%. NextEra is hiring as it builds, and it has not linked AI to job cuts. These figures do not show that AI caused any change.
Revenue, headcount and revenue per employee, FY2022 to FY2025
- FY2022: $20.96bn revenue, 15,300 employees, $1.37M per employee
- FY2023: $28.11bn revenue, 16,800 employees, $1.67M per employee
- FY2024: $24.75bn revenue, 16,800 employees, $1.47M per employee
- FY2025: $27.41bn revenue, 17,400 employees, $1.58M per employee
Change, FY2022 to FY2025: revenue up 31%, headcount up 14%, revenue per employee up 15%.
Notes: Revenue is operating revenues, as reported. Headcount is approximate, at year-end. Operating revenues swing with gains and losses on hedging contracts at NextEra Energy Resources, so year-to-year changes partly reflect accounting, not activity.
These figures give context on scale and productivity. They do not show that AI caused any change. Sources: NextEra Energy 10-K filings.
